Katie Ellen Wilkins was born in the USA, grew up on Bunurong Country in Victoria, and now lives and works in Newcastle/Muloobinba. Her practice explores the relationship between material, colour, and process through staining, dyeing, and repetitive handwork. Working with fabric, ink, natural dyes, and thread, she creates intuitive, materially driven works that balance control and surrender, allowing systems of repetition and structure to shift through absorption, tension, gravity, and time.

Katie is an educator and the founder of Studio Tinta, an independent creative studio dedicated to natural dye practices and community engagement. In January 2025, her book Hand Dyed Designs was published by Hardie Grant. In 2025, Katie was selected as one of two artists to present a solo exhibition as part of Collect: Focus at The Lock-Up. She is currently a resident artist at the Creator Incubator.

Studio Tinta silks are stocked at Newcastle Art Gallery.
